What is Safe Sleep?
Safe Sleep is creating an environment for your baby to sleep or changing guardian behavior that lowers the risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related deaths.
Sleep can be a big challenge for families, whether its your first baby or an addition to your growing family; practicing safe sleep can help your baby and you sleep soundly and safely.
Specific recommendations for safe sleep from the American Academy of Pediatrics include:
-
At night and for all naps, place your baby on their back
-
Use a firm, flat surface for baby to sleep on
-
Do not sleep with your baby
-
Instead of sharing a bed with your baby, share a room instead (keep your baby’s sleep area in the same room where you sleep)
-
Keep soft objects and loose bedding out of your baby’s sleep area
-
Don’t let your baby get overheated
