Giardia is a microscopic parasite that causes diarrheal illness. Giardia is found on surfaces or in soil, food, or water that has been contaminated with feces from infected humans or animals. Giardia is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside of the body for long periods of time. This shell also makes Giardia tolerant to chlorine disinfection. Drinking water and recreational water are the most common modes of transmission. Click the link below to find out more.
