What is a Peer Specialist?

A Peer Specialist is a person with lived experience in mental health or substance use recovery who is trained and credentialed to help others in their recovery. This authentic background allows them to connect without judgment and provide first-hand proof that recovery is possible.

What They Do:

In Wyoming, Certified Peer Specialists serve as mentors, advocates, and walk alongside individuals to help:

  • Navigate Systems: Help with the complexities of the healthcare, housing, and legal systems. 
  • Build “Recovery Capital”: Build relationships and resources, like social support and housing, to focus on long-term stability. 
  • Develop Coping Skills: Share practical strategies for managing life’s challenges in recovery.
  • Provide Emotional Support: Offer a non-judgmental, peer relationship that fosters hope and motivation.

    • A Credentialed Profession:

    Since 2021, the Wyoming Department of Health has partnered with Recover Wyoming to provide rigorous training and certification for Peer Specialists. This ensures that every Peer Specialist who works in Wyoming is trained to meet ethical and professional standards.
