Preventing Influenza (Flu)
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness and at times can lead to death.
The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. We recommend that almost everyone over the age of six months should get a seasonal flu shot.
Certain population groups are more vulnerable to serious flu-related illness or even death, including people over 60, pregnant women, children under 5, and people with underlying conditions (asthma, diabetes, heart disease, etc.).
One way to protect the most vulnerable in our community is to work towards a community of immunity. This means that Wyoming residents outside of those vulnerable populations still get their flu shots to help prevent contracting the flu and/or to lessen the seriousness of their own conditions.
