Green Dot for College
Green Dot for College is an evidence-based strategy from Alteristic, Inc. that is listed in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Sexual Violence Prevention Resource for Action. The program empowers people to intervene by speaking up against violent behaviors, promoting positive social norms, and offering help or support in situations where violence may occur or has occurred. Green Dot revolves around three key components: workshops to train college students and employees on how to ensure safety and intervene in high-risk situations, social marketing campaigns to reinforce prevention skills, and evaluation to maximize program effectiveness. Green Dot in Wyoming
Sexual assault, sexual misconduct, and domestic/intimate partner violence are serious public health concerns. In 2024, 16.1% of Wyoming residents between the ages of 18 and 29 who took the Wyoming Young Adult Survey reported experiencing at least one instance of nonconsensual sexual touching in the last 12 months. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (2021), the highest-risk age group for sexual violence victimization is 18-24 years of age. This age range represents the majority of college students, thus indicating an increased risk of sexual assault among college campus communities compared to the population at large.
The University of Wyoming (UW) has seen positive results from the implementation of Green Dot. Evaluation of the program found that after implementing Green Dot there were “10-20% reductions overall across different types of sexual assault” and that students who attended Green Dot trainings were much more likely to engage in bystander behaviors, including walking a friend who has had too much to drink home, speaking up against sexist jokes, and intervening with a friend who was being physically or verbally abusive to another person. Based on this improvement, and in consultation with those who implement Green Dot at UW, the Wyoming Injury and Violence Prevention Program (WIVPP) decided to direct funding from the Rape Prevention and Education (RPE) grant toward the expansion of Green Dot for College within Community Colleges in Wyoming.
