Preventing Injury and Violence
Injuries and violence are significant public health problems limiting the ability of Americans to live to their full potential. Injuries and violence cause premature death and disability and place a substantial burden on Americans. More than 243,000 people die due to injuries and violence each year. Millions more are injured and survive, only to cope with lifelong disabilities. Each year, nearly 28 million people are treated for injuries in U.S. emergency departments due to injuries and violence.
Intentional Injury
The term “intentional” is used to refer to injuries resulting from purposeful human action, whether directed at oneself or others. Intentional injuries include self inflicted and interpersonal acts of violence intended to cause harm. Suicide and self-harm and domestic and sexual violence are more common than homicide in Wyoming.
Unintentional Injury
Unintentional” refers to injuries that were unplanned and not inflicted through deliberate means. This includes injuries and poisonings described as unintended or “accidental”, regardless of whether the injury was inflicted by oneself or by another person.
