How We Work
The Wyoming Medication Donation Program (WMDP) operates as a mail-order pharmacy located in Cheyenne, WY and is operated by pharmacy technicians and pharmacists. The WMDP is a part-time program, operating M-F 9am-3pm MST and it is a closed-door facility (cannot be accessed by the public).
The WMDP fills prescriptions from donated inventory collected from donors and then mails prescriptions to qualified patients within Wyoming. Because WMDP relies on the mail system, prescriptions can take several days to be received. To apply for assistance, prospective patients must apply with the WDMP and it can take up to one week processing time before medications are dispensed (if the patient qualifies). Once eligible/approved for the program, a patient will receive their medications from the WMDP for up to one year, and then the patient will need to reapply. It is the patient’s responsibility to notify the WMDP of changes to contact information (address/phone number) as well as changes to insurance, income, or residency status.
The WMDP only fills 30-day supplies of medication at a time, and patients will need to call the program each month to request a refill on their medications (no automatic refills). If the WMDP does not have a medication in stock at the time it is requested, the item is placed on our wait-list. Once a wait-listed item is received by WMDP, the patient’s prescription will be filled as soon as possible (the patient does not need to call and request this service).
***Please note: we are a closed-door facility and we are not open to the public. Those in the Cheyenne area looking to donate should drop off their items to Health Works Pharmacy.
Why is it Important?
Health
- Medication compliance is one of the most important modifiable factors in the managing of chronic or complex diseases to improve health.
- The WMDP is connecting with providers around the state to refer patients which improved prescription access for those in need.
- Since beginning in 2007, the program has helped Wyoming residents fill OVER 150,000 prescriptions (worth over $25 million) they could not have afforded otherwise.
- In 2023, WMDP mailed over 10,000 prescriptions with donated medicine free of charge for qualified patients.
Pollution
- Keeping medications from polluting our streams and landfills supports Wyoming population health as a whole.
- Since 2009, nearly 20,000 pounds of unacceptable medications have been safely incinerated.
- Since July 2008, the program has processed over 88,000 pounds of donated medications and medical supplies for redistribution.
Risk
- Removing unused medications from homes reduces the risk of accidental poisonings and drug abuse.
- More than 66,000 young children visit Emergency Rooms each year because of medication poisonings.
- Donating your unused medications helps reduce the risk of poisonings in your home, keeping the ones you love safe.
Background
- In 2005 the Drug Donation Program Act was passed by the Wyoming Legislature allowing unused medications to be donated to participating donation sites to be dispensed to Wyoming residents who cannot afford their medications. The Wyoming Department of Health, Division of Healthcare Financing coordinates this program.
- The program has changed locations several times as it as grown throughout the years. Click here to view: WMDP Locations Through the Years

Don’t let unused medicine go to waste!
