Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS)
The YRBSS monitors risk behaviors that are often established during childhood and early adolescence and result in unintentional and intentional injuries. The risk categories monitored through the survey include: Tobacco Use, Unhealthy Dietary Behaviors, Physical Inactivity, Alcohol & Other Drug Use, Sexual Behavior/STD’s/HIV/AIDS/Unintended Pregnancies and Violence/Injury. Click here to view YRBSS Data. The last year this was done in WY is 2015.
Prevention Needs Assessment (PNA)
The PNA is developed to measure a wide variety of attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions that have been shown to be related to alcohol, tobacco, and drug use along with violent and problem behaviors. It also monitors the percent of students that have used or are currently using alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drugs; along with the percent who are participating or have participated in violent and other problem behaviors. The PNA is unique because it helps bridge the distance between some of the “causes” and the actual problem behaviors endorsed by the students. Information from this survey can be used to choose and evaluate prevention interventions, strategies and policies for schools, school districts, communities and the State of Wyoming. Click here to visit the PNA website.
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
The BRFSS collects data from randomly selected non-institutionalized adults age 18 and older, through monthly telephone surveys. All 50 states currently conduct the survey, with the collaboration and support of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently Wyoming conducts about 6,000 telephone interviews each year. Final yearly data are weighted by CDC to account for different probabilities of selection and to be representative of the total adult Wyoming population by gender and age group. Click here to visit the Wyoming BRFSS website to obtain Wyoming-specific tobacco data.
Wyoming Vital Statistics Service (VSS)
The Wyoming VSS office has data on maternal smoking rates, low birth weight babies, and causes of death, which include tobacco-related factors. Click here to visit the VSS website to view annual summaries as well as detailed county-level data.
Annual Synar Report (ASR)
Synar requires retail inspections in an effort to restrict the sale of tobacco products to individuals under age 18. The Annual Synar Report (ASR) outlines the procedures, protocol, and survey process of these inspections. The ASR must be made public before submission to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the public is welcome to give feedback on the report.
