Certain risk factors for heart disease cannot be controlled, such as age or family history. However, there are three key risk factors that can be controlled: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking (CDC, 2017).
Are you at risk?
Like heart disease you may be able to lower your chances of having a stroke by leading a healthy lifestyle. You may also be able to save a life by knowing the signs of stroke and calling 9-1-1 right away. If you think someone is having a stroke, act F.A.S.T.
F—Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A—Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S—Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?
T—Time: If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.
